Tiny Holes is the avant-new wave-dance super group you never heard of. These future legends of independent music skirted the fine line between obscurity and nothingness, producing a small, effective body of cheeky noise. Seattle uber-producer Jack Endino, who mixed and mastered the album, says "The whole thing is impossibly brilliant".
Electronic music pioneer Steve Fisk and burgeoning sound artist Steve Peters started a quirky electro-pop project called Customer Service. After moderate exposure in Olympia and Seattle (their first gig was opening for Gang of Four), this duo morphed into a trio with future fanzine publisher, cassette-zine visionary, and Sub/Pop record mogul Bruce Pavitt, called Professional Ethics. The rhythm section of drummer Phillip Hertz and bass monster Paul Tison came on board, and Tiny Holes was born. For a year they annoyed the neighbors and laid waste to dance floors in Olympia, Seattle and Portland. This album is from their last show, recorded on a mobile 8-track. Producer Jack Endino agreed to handle the mix, comix artist Peter Bagge was drafted to create cover art, and here we are.
Isa Fdez. Reviriego defends her song that states "doing nothing" is a sublime pleasure; the truth is Isabel herself finds it very difficult to stay still. In the last year, she soundtracked the Playstation video game Melbits World and a short film for Stella McCartney and provided singing voices for the Spanish-language version of Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time.
In 2011, Isa discovered a melodic, kaleidoscopic, punk and unpredictable universe inside her head - one in which Brian Wilson's melodies and Leon Tolstoi's law-breaking final messages - could happily dance hand in hand to electronic rhythms. She called it Aries, after her zodiac sign. Her fourth/latest album, Juramento Mantarraya, released by K in North America, is a collection of beautiful melodies, a combination of violins, flutes, industrial sounds, and chest-rattling bass. Isa and co-producer Jose VÃ¡zquez create an exciting mixture of soul and free-jazz rhythms, melodies from the girl groups of the 60s, sunshine pop, Spanish folk and experimental electronics. Combining her precious voice and the sounds of the Galician Coast, where she creates, she speaks of friendship, love, and the beauty of error. A collection of dazzling intervals created by someone who knows that only those who are as excited taking a walk as composing melodies can reach people’s hearts.
Old Time Relijun is an unearthly combo from Olympia, Washington. We don’t throw words like "genius", "brilliant" or "legendary" around lightly. Nor do we use them to describe Old Time Relijun (though others do). We prefer to see them as "mythical". Their new EP, See Now and Know [KLP272], appears after a mysterious decade-long dormancy, reuniting the classic Catharsis in Crisis [KLP184] lineup featuring bandleader Arrington de Dionyso with Aaron Hartman (upright bass), Germaine Baca (drums) and Benjamin Hartman (saxophone and percussion). This is the band's 9th studio recording and they appear to have exploded spontaneously, pounding together a fiery record, forged from within. Resistance, magic and hope are catalysts for a deeper tunneling under. The songs are typical OTR: sexy, untethered, and sing-along at the edge of the volcano fun. "Dragon Juice" conjures a dance party in a dangerous lair; "I Know I’m Alive" brings an inspired moment on the mountain into sharp, soulful focus; and "El Naranjo Gritando" brings us up close to the big nasty. There is real, palpable urgency in this recording.
The new Calvin Johnson album A Wonderful Beast [KLP269] is an experiment in sound. Using the theory "Rock'n'roll Will Never Die" as a starting point, Calvin entered the Audio Eagle Studio in Nashville, TN. Working closely with Producer Patrick Carney and Chief Engineer Marc Whitmore, the team tested the resiliency of such time honored materials as the electric guitar, modular synthesizer and trap drum kit, combining them in various ratios with elements like musical chords A, C and Dm. The results are a Frankenstein's monster of an album, A Wonderful Beast. Michelle Branch, who score many hits in the early double-0 decade as a solo artist and as a member of the Wreckers and lives next door to Audio Eagle, provides back-up harmony vocals on three songs. Following in the tradition of such Brill Building songwriting teams as Leiber-Stoller, Greenwich-Barry and Goffin-King, all the songs on A Wonderful Beast are a collaboration between Calvin Johnson and Patrick Carney. Carney, best known for his work as a member of the Akron, OH powerhouse The Black Keys, established Audio Eagle to further exactly this type of rock'n'roll workshoping, allowing the music and songwriting of NOW to rocket launched into the FUTURE.
C Average emerged onto the Olympia independent rock scene in 1996, pummeling the senses of onlookers. For over two decades, their sonic onslaught of medieval riffs and crazed pounding drums has commanded the stage and stereo. Among the universe's great mysteries is how a mere two-piece could generate such a powerful, magical noise. Many have also wondered what C Average could create, if they combined forces with other powerful wizards. Triumphantly, we wonder no more, with the addition of Olivia Love (lead vocals) and John Boyce (bass). Creating a larger canvas and a more magnificently and elaborately illustrated soundscape, C Average embark on a voyage through the stars and beyond. Passage requires only a willingness to unlock your imagination. To simply call "III" a "Space Rock Opera" would be a disservice. With methodical and refined songwriting, C Average compose a dynamic body of music that leaves the listener discovering something new with each spin. Understanding, Mirah's 6th full length solo record, is a conscientious return to her early unconventional recording process - an embrace of spirited imperfection and rawness inclusive of rough first takes, natural room sounds, and a fair amount of broken equipment. Bathed in the sparkles of disco ball light, Mirah recorded demos with vocals, guitar, organ, and percussion in a former army barracks gymnasium at The Headlands Center for the Arts, where she spent four weeks as an artist in residence.
Once home in Brooklyn, Mirah teamed up with her frequent co-producer Eli Crews (tUnE-yArDs, The Julie Ruin, Son Lux) and invited Deerhoof's Greg Saunier to join them in the studio. The collaboration sparked new textures and ideas. Building on top of Mirah's vibrant original tracks, they used midi to transform a marimba into a distorted farfisa melody, drastically lowered the pitch of vocals until they morphed into sub-bass lines, and added layers of distinct timbres from Crews' extensive vintage synth collection, a mellotron, and an 80's era Soviet drum machine.
Written and recorded in a time of political and personal upheaval - family illness and the death of a dear friend - Mirah (one of the best lyricists of our indie rock generation) uses her sharp intellect, empathy, and a measure of levity to shine a light on the world around us and the ways of our own hearts, showing us that understanding is what we all need a little more of.

The Rhythm Record Vol. One Echoes from the Scene Control Room [KLP045] album was recorded at many of the same 1994-'95 Dub Narcotic Studio sessions as the Dub Narcotic Sound System debut Boot Party [KLP049], with many of the same participants. It's an all-instrumental affair, heavily dominated by Calvin Johnson's trademark melodica (which is still being deployed throughout his contemporary Selector Dub Narcotic experiments). Featured players include members of Dub Narcotic Sound System and other K combos of the time like Wandering Lucy and Kicking Giant, augmented by Olympia residents and visitors from as far away as New York City and Tokyo, Japan.
This album was originally released in 1995; it has been unavailable since 1999. Recently remastered by Adam Gonsalves at Telegraph Mastering it has a fresh, echoplasmic sheen of bass and drum beat rhyme. Although still vinyl-only, there will be a digital version of the album available for download or streaming through the usual suspects.
Sundial began as a special project Mirah was asked to do for the BRIC Arts/Media House in Brooklyn in 2016. She immediately contacted longtime friend and collaborator Jherek Bishoff to work on creating string arrangements for some of her songs for this special performance. Following the project the two decided to tour the songs with a string quartet. Never one to do things in the normal order, it was only after the shows were over that it dawned on Mirah to make a record of all this beautiful stuff. With the exception of "Sundial" each of these songs has appeared on a previous recordings, now with new breath breathed into them by the unique and varied arrangements. The 7 song e.p. is being released as a limited edition 12" clear vinyl record.

The debut album by Selector Dub Narcotic is an exercise in ecstatic genre-smashing, blending and up-ending. Calvin Johnson of the K label and such Olympia combos as Dub Narcotic Sound System, Beat Happening, Halo Benders and most recently The Hive Dwellers has been working under the nom de plume Selector Dub Narcotic since founding the Dub Narcotic Studio in 1993. This Party Is just Getting Started is a collaboration with NW hip hop producer Smoke M2D6, who first began working with K producing the All Your Friend's Friends [KLP255] compilation. As a member of the Oldominion crew Smoke M2D6 has produced almost every major hip hop artist in Washington and Oregon. This Party Is just Getting Started began with the song "All for the Sake of Rhymin'" (which samples K artist Mahjongg) and snowballed into an entire album of dance pop garage soul with Calvin's trademark melodica wafting overall.

"I've done everything myself. Every sound is mine, every synthesizer, every melody, every beat," says Isabel Fernandez Reviriego, who is releasing Adieu Or Die under her pseudonym, Aries. It isn't simply notable anymore that someone is their own band, overdubbing over and over, but in the case of Aries, we have music that is so thickly and sturdily constructed, through layer upon meticulous layer, it becomes not just a marvel of sound, but one of craft.
Aries' music is densely melodic, like echoes of the American west coast in the 1960s coming through the Spanish radio waves. On "En el Oceano" her voice twists around itself like a stick of Twizzlers licorice. Amidst all the synthesizers, drum machines, buzzes and whirrs, the most prominent, playful, melancholy, important piece pasting everything together is Reviriego's voice, light and dancing in circles around every song. On Adieu Or Die, she says, "someone disintegrates, while the world disintegrates around him or her." But there is something beautiful in the way things fall apart, in the way that things die. Aries lives in that nook, comfortable and warm.
Silas Blak is a unique force in Seattle's hip-hop scene, spitting complex bars about subjects that rappers seldom approach, let alone attack head-on. Known for his work in formative Pacific Northwest groups Blak Stax, Silent Lambs Project, & Blind Council, Blak remains a valued member of the region's hip-hop community. Since teaming up with Cabin Games Records in 2014, the veteran MC has wasted no time in unleashing a barrage of new material. Blak's work at the 'Cabin' began with the weekly-song series titled #BlakFriday, which has garnered praise from national blogs such as The Source, Okayplayer, School of Hip-Hop, and many more. "This mixtape is my first solo in a minute. The playing field has changed but the craft stays the same and I wanted to evolve without making up shit or co-opting the struggle," Blak said in reference to #BlakFriday, which will be released as a two-part mixtape during summer 2015. Created in 2010 by vocalist/guitarist Jem Marie as a solo project, the Ghost Ease evolved into a Portland, OR-based three-piece with the addition of drummer Nsayi Matingou in 2012 and bassist Laurence Vidal in 2014. The Ghost Ease's woozy and vivid self-titled debut was released on Talking Helps in 2013 before the trio partnered with Cabin Games for the powerful/seething Quit Yer Job EP (May 2015) and upcoming Steve Fisk-recorded full-length - aptly titled RAW - due out September 2015. RAW is simultaneously heavy and ethereal like an amethyst raincloud. The 10 tracks ebb and flow from softened layers of melody to frenetic shreds of distortion. Matingou's drumming moves nimbly while Vidal's bass ensures the album's swirling moments crash comfortably into the angular grunge freakouts. The dreamy intensity of Marie's guitar sounds are neatly woven around her voice. Her lilting cadence casts the album's moods like spells. From the tuneful crusher "PJM" to the swelling of "Gemini Rise" and the majestic piano of "Bye, Love," RAW embodies its name.
