Mike Adams At His Honest Weight: There Is No Feeling Better

There Is No Feeling Better, the fourth album from Bloomington, Indiana's Mike Adams at His Honest Weight finds the titular Adams-the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer at the center of the independent pop institution-focused less on who he is and more on where he is. Though the album's not short on truthful introspection, it's an outward gaze that defines these eleven songs. It's the kind of record you can make only after really knowing how to make records. It's ambitious, but never labored sounding, sweeping but always intimate.

Pulling from disparate sources, like retro-pop era Starflyer 59, ELO, the Beach Boys at their most transcendental, the Southern gospel of the Isaacs, and the dead-serious humor of The Roches, Adams has shaped these touchstones into a new world. The sock hop mysticism of "Free & Reduced," the noir mood of "That’s One Way," the lush cooing of "Educated Guess," the daydream pop of "Olivia"-you can live in songs like these. They're testaments to the act of creation and recreation, examinations of the glee that can be accessed by ripping up the map and getting lost.

Kishi Bashi: Omoiyari

Imagine being forced from your home. Imagine being sent to a prison camp with no trial, and no promise of release. Imagine all this happened simply because of the language you speak, the shade of your skin, or the roots of your family tree. For over 120,000 Japanese Americans this was a reality during World War II. It’s a reality that Kishi Bashi seeks to reckon with on his latest release Omoiyari.

Omoiyari is Kishi Bashi’s fourth album following the acclaimed 151a (2012), Lighght (2014), and Sonderlust (2016), which have garnered serious acclaim from outlets including NPR Music, The Wall Street Journal, and The Guardian and his most important yet. Many of the songs were initially inspired by history and oppression, and he deftly weaves tales of love, loss, and wanting to connect listeners to the past. Channeling the hard-learned lessons of history, Omoiyari is an uncompromising musical statement on the turbulent sociopolitical atmosphere of present-day America.

Big Business: The Beast You Are

The Beast You Are , the new album from L.A.'s Big Business, delivers 10 doses of uncategorizably heavy rock music. From the ominous death march of "The Moor You Know" to the soaring "Let Them Grind" to the delicate, ethereal "Under Everest," the band continues to defy listeners’ expectations. There are hints of Melvins, Torche, and Tad, but drummer Coady Willis (Murder City Devils) and bassist/vocalist Jared Warren (Karp) bring their own offkilter sensibilities to the genre. The two formed Big Business in 2004, and their idiosyncrasies soon caught the attention of The Melvins. Together they recorded three albums, an EP, and various songs between 2006 and 2016, all while maintaining their own identity as Big Business. They also picked up guitarists Toshi Kasai and Scott Martin along the way, but on 2016's Command Your Weather , they returned to their core duo format. They remain in that lineup for this, their sixth full length: The Beast You Are.

Good Fuck: Good Fuck

"Good Fuck is the byproduct of collaborative conscious alignment. We jammed sometimes, usually late at night with a couple drinks in us, never bothering to record. And we'd tweak various setups while making lunch or getting ready for work. But mostly we talked about what it would be, defining the parameters. For months we talked and talked about it. We spent most nights DJ'ing for each other or checking out shows, identifying and refining what we were drawn to, where we found surprising cracks or overlaps. Then finally we packed the car and drove 13 hours to The Millay Colony in upstate New York: an artist's colony in The Berkshires, miles down a private road, next to 100,000 acres of national forest. And when we arrived, off-season and empty, we found it under four feet of snow. Our process was compressed into a single week in uninterrupted isolation, so we developed a working system to keep us moving and intuitive, trading tracks back and forth on a schedule. For the lyrics we agreed on 12 books we thought most relevant and came up with various systems to collapse and collage them into each other in different combinations. And packing up after the end of the week, we were stunned by the results Of course there were snags, technological and psychological. And of course we threw a good amount away. But what was left was not the result of trying to write songs, but the effortless evidence of what emerged when we got clear in our intentions and then just let it out." Tim Kinsella

Eerie Wanda: Pet Town

For Dutch/Croatian songwriter and visual artist Marina Tadic, Pet Town represents time well spent in one's own shell. Her second LP as Eerie Wanda (and first for Joyful Noise Recordings), Pet Town is a stripped down spectral manifestation, anchored by Tadic's wistful lyrics and self possessed vocal delivery. Mixed by producer Jasper Geluk, the album is perched in warm, homespun recordings-live drums are replaced with handclaps, finger snaps, and a Roland CR78 drum machine, enhancing the music’s tactile and intimate headspace. Using minimal recording techniques, Tadic shaped these ten songs on sheer intuition, while drawing inspiration from solitude: how it can be both a state of euphoria but also one of loneliness-of inner meditation and outer yearning. Tadic is still left guessing how Pet Town came to be, exactly. "I wrote the songs over a period of time spent inside my shell, and I needed that time. Not escaping it brought me a lot of growth." Like some mysterious shamanic voice from the future, Eerie Wanda hushes turbulent peaks and valleys into a comforting, deft equilibrium. "I love to think I'm connected with some other dimension which sends me the songs and I can catch them if I'm in the right zone."

Anal Trump: The First 100 Songs

The true identities of Rob and Travis Trump remain shrouded in mystery. Whatever the origin of these mystery men, they found only one way to deal with the insanity happening in the political world: they became Anal Trump. Anal Trump come from a rich tradition of politically-motivated extreme music. Grindcore’s origins date back to Margaret Thatcher’s Britain, when a collective of teenage anarcho-punks decided to call themselves Napalm Death and throw thrash metal and hardcore punk in a blender set to “loudest” and “fastest.” The First 100 Songs pays tribute to classic Anal Cunt (AxCx) album titles like The 110 Song CD and 5643 Song EP. Rob feels their appeal lies in that gray area. “They took hate so far beyond everything that all meaning seemed to invert at some point and back again so often that it became impossible to take seriously.” Whatever the intent, they succeeded in horrifying parents everywhere. Anal Trump have one distinct advantage over Seth Putnam’s trailblazing act: whereas Putnam and his collaborators had to come up with their own sleazy subject matter, Rob and Travis have a ready-made supply of parent-offending quotes straight from the Oval Office. Produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Rob Trump, The First 100 Songs boasts a hundred songs in eleven minutes -- their entire recorded output to date. Rob and Travis Trump aren’t going to fill your ears with talk of universal healthcare or equal voting rights or any of that socialist stuff -- although they donated 100% of the proceeds from their EPs to non-profit organizations like the ACLU and Planned Parenthood. They just want to point out that the most powerful man in the world is a hate-mongering clown, using shrieks and micro-riffs as their chosen vehicle.

J Fernandez: Occasional Din

Occasional Din, the new fulllength LP from Chicago artist J Fernandez, is a sunny shoebox diorama for the eternal pessimist. Over the past decade, his songs by have appeared like unexpected gifts, each time invoking a holiday we didn't realize existed. And like good holidays, these songs are imbued with a mythical energy, full of curious moods, charmed settings and the timelessness of a familiar moment. Fernandez starts skeletons of songs with an organ and a Casio drum machine. Through endless revisions and tweaks, he builds and rebuilds each into complex arrangements. With Occasional Din , he mines the sound of the past; drawing influences from vintage Italian pop and soundtrack composers like Bruno Nicolai, Alessandro Alessandroni, and Mina, as well as their American contemporaries like The Free Design and Margo Guryan. Lyrically, Fernandez expands on previous themes of isolation by exploring topics such as climate change, trendforecasting and data collection. The result is a playful pop record that holds a kaleidoscopic mirror up to our need for escapism.

Tropical Fuck Storm: A Laughing Death in Meatspace

The phantasmagorical debut album by Tropical Fuck Storm, A Laughing Death in Meatspace , delivers a fraught vision of algorhythmic apocalypse. Featuring Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitchin from Australian heroes The Drones, Tropical Fuck Storm is an endofdays consciousnessstream across nine seething tracks. The debut divebombs into the realms of mortality and immortality, moralizing and amorality; the passing of time, and how little we have left. These are lurid songs, urgently told through Gareth Liddiard's barbed and byzantine lyricism, abrasive guitar slashes, drum adrenalin, raunchy bass and electronic undercurrents. They're raging, rapscallion, and funny, lyrically delving into everything from internet shaming to the kuru "laughing death" disease of the PNG highlands to Russian chess great Gary Kasparov’s portentous loss to an IBM computer. Live, Tropical Fuck Storm are a force of nature, conjuring chaos at every blistering performance, with zero shits to give for corporate music hegemony. "Kneel down by the advertising, don't you make a single false move" calls out the female chorus of Fiona Kitschin and Erica Dunn echoing the dismay of our time as we bear witness to the sinister seductions which social media surveillance has entangled us. A Laughing Death in Meatspace doesn’t show us the way out of this situation, but it howls along with us as we peer into the maelstrom ahead.

Danielson: Snap Outtavit

The most apt description of Daniel Smith's sojourn as a musician would be written in iambic pentameter, because this sojourn is as immemorial as The Pilgrim's Progress, or Paradise Regained, the son raised in a proper spiritual and musical household, who casts it all off, goes out and listens to a bunch of Syd Barrett and Don Van Vliet and similarly admirable material, is recast in the image of this highly original music, and who then returns to the fold, like in the parables. Nearer to the home fires, he is repurposed and begins to hear the profundity in the familial gospel sound, whereupon he conceives of this band, to be made up of his siblings and friends, which will reproduce this very sound of family, and his band records several albums of truly unique contemporary music, more punk than punk, more psychedelic than psychedelia, and more ecstatic and divinely inspired than a lot of the slick gospel music; he thus falls somewhere between the cracks, like a lot of truly revolutionary American composers, like Charles Ives, like Moondog, like Harry Partch, like Meredith Monk, like Sun Ra. From this singular perch, Smith composes some of the most original music of the nineties and oughts, with his siblings by his side, often wearing inventive homemade costumes spun from the metaphors of the Daniel Smith cosmogony.

Swamp Dogg: Love, Loss, and Auto-Tune

In 1970, Southern soul music maverick Jerry Williams, Jr. made the most radical move of his career. Frustrated with music business politics Williams reinvented himself as Swamp Dogg, an irreverent antihero smashing the conventions of commercial R&B music. Swamp Dogg's debut release Total Destruction to Your Mind featured a post-apocalyptic take on the Muscle Shoals’ sound, with lyrics inspired by the revolutionary politics and psychedelic drugs of the late '60s. The music on Total Destruction to Your Mind stood worlds apart from the formulaic pop tunes Williams started cutting in 1954 under the name Little Jerry, and Swamp Dogg hasn’t looked back since. But the music business wasn’t ready for Swamp Dogg, nor was the rest of America. His bizarre album titles and wild cover art turned the average consumer off, while his subversive lyrics earned him a spot on Richard Nixon's infamous enemies list. Swamp Dogg was not deterred. He seemed to relish operating from the margins of the music business, consequently becoming one of the quintessential outsider figures in American music. Now, nearly fifty years after his debut release, Swamp Dogg stands on the precipice of another radical reinvention. His latest creation, Love, Loss, and Auto Tune, is a nine song collection featuring production by Poliça's Ryan Olson, and finds Swamp Dogg's bluesy southern soul colliding head on with 21st Century electronic music production techniques.

It's the kind of couplet you'd carve into a wall whilst savoring the irony at hand, but when Yoni Wolf spit the line ten years ago he was blissfully, broodily unaware that he and his band WHY? were creating a career defining album -- one so fan adored that it would go out of print, and so influential that the artpop heroine Lorde herself would lovingly steal the very lyric quoted above. When it dropped in 2008, Alopecia not only marked WHY?'s evolution from a sonically collaged mostly solo project to a live recorded powerhouse band of badass multi-instrumentalists. It also minted a genre of one: wryly written, poignantly posed, simultaneously swaggering and heartrending songrap that jangles like folk, bursts like psychrock, and sways like chamber pop. To this day, there is no other group in the known universe that sounds or feels like WHY? does on Alopecia. The album's 2018 reissue cheekily etches that aural likeness into our musical history.

Optiganally Yours: O.Y. In Hi-Fi

The Optigan was a chord organ made by Mattel in the early 1970s that played back lo-fi sound loops on flexible LP sized discs, each disc containing optically encoded rhythm section grooves in a particular style of music (i.e. country, bossanova), along with drum loops and keyboard tones. Think of it as the 1970's version of GarageBand, where amateur artists could put together their own songs using loops of recordings by professional musicians. Optiganally Yours started in the mid 1990's when Pea Hix became obsessed with the magnificent Optigan. When Pea had the idea to start a band around these haunting sounds, his roommate Rob Crow chimed in and said "I'll be the singer, and the band will be called Optiganally Yours." After releasing two albums 1997's Spotlight On Optiganally Yours followed by Exclusively Talentmaker in 2000 Pea rescued the Optigan's original studio master tapes from a SoCal garage, and set out to assemble basic tracks from the thousands of loops and samples the tapes contained. Thus work began on a third album, O.Y. in HiFi. "Several of these sessions never became discs, so Pea chopped them up, as you would with a real Optigan," says Crow. "And we wrote all these new songs using these materials, in addition to my guitar and voice of course. I think it's the best record I've ever done."

The Blank Tapes: Candy

THE BLANK TAPES is the moniker of Los Angeles based multi-instrumentalist, Matt Adams, who has produced over a dozen albums of 1960's inspired folk-rock-surf-psych-soul-pop on Volcom, Burger Records, Antenna Farm, and many others. Their new album "Candy" was produced by Eric D Johnson (of The Fruit Bats) at his home studio in Portland, OR featuring bandmates Will Halsey of "Sugar Candy Mountain" & Veronica Bianqui as well as EDJ himself. The Blank Tapes have toured throughout America, Canada, Brazil, UK, Europe, & Japan. Matt is also the visual artist behind his band’s (and a slew of others) posters & album covers.
