Bobby Oroza: Your Love Is Too Cold b/w Deja Vu

The first time we heard Bobby Oroza, it was his slow moody ballad "This Love", that perked the world's ears and made a name for the dapper crooner that calls Finland his home. Since it's release, "This Love" has become somewhat of an underground hit, the soundtrack to car shows and swap meets in the West Coast, numerous movies and TV shows, and it even made it to Earl Sweatshirt's most recent mixtape. This new single from Bobby Oroza picks up the tempo and show- cases another side of his range with a record sure to move bodies and nod heads. The A side "Your Love Is Too Cold" is a stomper that blends the groovy soul drumming of early Motown records with guitar that could have been lifted from a James Bond soundtrack. Bobby pleads over the track of his decision to call it quits and keep it quits. The B side "Deja Vu" finds Oroza leaning again into the B side ballad stylings that made him a name to check for. Heavy duty drums lay down the canvas on which Bobby's vocals paint the picture of a relationship that has come to a fork in the road. The Cold Diamond & Mink production and backing band are tight as ever and this is sure to be another classic with the slowie fans.

Brainstory: Dead End b/w Mnemophobia

** TITLE HAS NOT BEEN ANNOUNCED! PLEASE DO NOT POST ANYWHERE ONLINE (INCLUDING A PREORDER) UNTIL MARCH 11th, 2019**

Big Crown is proud the present the debut single from the one of the newest acts on the roster; Brainstory. Brainstory is a tale of brothers bounded by blood, by fate, and a small town with nothing to do. Born and bred in Rialto, CA, the trio is made up of two brothers, Kevin & Tony Martin, and drummer Eric Hagstrom. Their music is a mix of jazz, funk, and psychedelia shrouded in a cloud of weed smoke and California soul. Their entire debut album is produced by Leon Michels, so you take the Cali sunshine and mix it with Michels NYC aesthetic and you get a killer record. Here's the first two songs.

The A side "Dead End" is a sublime slow burner about trying to let go of a person and trying to let go of parts of yourself that are dying with that relationship. In the words of Kevin, "It's kind of like confronting death, but through relationships and coming to terms with who you are in the mirror of another person." With Kevin's sublime falsetto floating atop Tony and Eric's unflappable and unmistakable backbeat, this tune is sure to become a favorite with the ballad heads, the low-riders, the slowie collectors, and anyone who's cord is not unplugged.

The B side Mnemophobia is a fateful pairing with the plugside, as if written later on when the heart heals and you start to get out there again. Mnemophobia is the fear of memories. Brainstory weaves up a tale of hesitation, limbo, then bravery where the choice of love is made in the face of fear.

Lady Wray: Piece Of Me b/e Come On In

Last year, a month before Nicole gave birth to her first child, she visited Leon Michels in upstate NY and cooked up two of the toughest and most moving songs we’ve heard from her to date. We’ve been patiently sitting on this release for a few months now, and it is an understatement to say Big Crown is proud to present the newest 45 from Lady Wray.

Side A,“Piece Of Me” , sounds like a lost Dilla beat that sampled a lost David Porter song. Guaranteed to have heads nodding from the first snare crack, Nicole sings a tune about the difficulties of dealing with family and friends who need more than you can provide. The chorus says it all, “I’ll let you take a piece of me, I hope you get the piece you need and if that’s not enough I’ll let you go peacefully…” From the jump, Nicole’s voice takes the listener into a world where you have no choice but to feel something in the pit of your stomach.

Side B “Come On In” finds Lady Wray tapping into her early years singing in church. With only three instruments and Nicole’s voice, “Come On In” is a masterclass in the craft of singing, the sound of soul, and the power of restraint.

Lee Fields & The Expressions: It Rains Love

It Rains Love is the 2nd album by Lee Fields & The Expressions on Brooklyn's Big Crown Records and gives us yet another masterclass in soul. Teaming up again with frequent collaborator and producer Leon Michels and his devoted band, The Expressions, they have managed again to take a classic approach and update it. Traditional soul sensibilities are mixed with a hip-hop tinged, sample ready sound that is as much an homage to the old as to the new. Some of the songs sound like they could belong to any of the last 4 decades without it feeling like a throwback, while others are 60's soul through and through. Lyrically, Lee runs the gamut from gushing admonishments of love to politically charged calls to action, from proclamations of God's existence to love letters written to his wife. This record marks the fifth studio album from Lee Fields & the Expressions and we are very proud to add it to the already impeccable catalog they have created together. Another strong offering by a man many people consider to be a national treasure, the professor of love himself, Mr Lee Fields.
