The Juan Maclean: Can You Ever Really Know Somebody

The Juan Maclean return to DFA with a stand-alone single, bursting with deep house elastic bounce and electronic pop flourishes, married to the deadpan earnestness of Nancy Whang's vocal delivery. "Can You Ever Really Know Somebody" is the kind of slinky song that is easily absorbed and difficult to forget. It is a taste of things to come, as The Juan Maclean prepares a brand new LP for DFA due out in Fall 2017. The remix is courtesy of LA-4A, aka Ambivalent and legally known as American born producer Kevin McHugh. Stripping out the house music and replacing it with a grinding electro-acid template, LA-4A creates a lovely buzzing new bed of music for Nancy Whang's vocals to rest on top of it. This is a remix with wildly successful results and a perfect companion to the original.

The Juan Maclean: In A Dream

The dance world way too often privileges the new, and not many dance artists write albums as good as In A Dream, the third full-length album by The Juan MacLean, this far into their career. The Juan MacLean have weathered electroclash, disco-punk, electro-disco, techno, house, deep house, and whatever we can call the sound of today. They never feel totally in step with the moment, but somehow always feel right and necessary. Put differently: there's always something exciting to say about these guys.

Let's start with Nancy Whang. Nancy's voice has always been a kind of secret weapon on The Juan Maclean records, but this album is her triumph. Just take a look above at the album art where she's front and center This is the Nancy Show - you get all sides of Nancy on this record, a wide range of expression. These are all love songs, but emotions run wild. And you can't pull this off without Nancy - she's not living in these songs, she's leading them.

The first full-length by The Juan Maclean since 2009, comprised of entirely new material.

The Clean: Anthology

Anthology serves as a celebration of The Clean, a band whose influence extends so far beyond their New Zealand home that even if you have never heard of The Clean before, you have surely heard of some of the bands (Pavement, Yo La Tengo, and Superchunk, to name a few) who have been influenced by their unique blend of homemade garage rock, hook-filled melodies, and psychedelic experimentalism.

The album is a compilation of songs from across The Clean's legendary musical career, which began in 1981 and continues today. Merge originally released the 2-CD Anthology in 2003, but in celebration of our 25th anniversary, we felt the time was right to release this essential collection on quadruple LP.

Hamish and David Kilgour formed The Clean in 1978. Hamish played drums, and David picked up a guitar and figured out how to play it as he went along. Various other folk passed through the Kilgour brothers’ orbit during the first two years or so before Robert Scott (The Bats) joined on bass. Hamish, David, and Robert all wrote songs and sang in The Clean, who made their first recordings for the renowned New Zealand label Flying Nun in 1981.

The Cleaners From Venus: In The Golden Autumn

Available for the first time on vinyl, ‘In the Golden Autumn’ is a product of founding member Martin Newell and fellow kitchen porter, Martin Chapman. This is the first record in the “Vol.2” batch of formerly cassette-only reissues that have been remastered for a long overdue vinyl release. This legendary lo-fi band, which continues to be highly influential as evident in the critical claim of the first three records from the band, released in spring of 2011.

Martin Newell, who formed the legendary lo-fi band Cleaners From Venus in the small town of Wivenhoe, England began work on ‘In the Golden Autumn’ in the warm early spring of 1983. One of Newell’s chief problems at this time, apart from constant money shortages, was finding musical collaborators who shared his own skewed pop vision. The absolute opposite of a musical perfectionist, the founder Cleaner believed that great pop was to be had by doing things quickly, in slapdash fashion and by ‘fumbling around in the dark in search of happy accidents.’ Liner notes explaining the time and place are written by Newell himself, giving some insight into each song.
