Kishi Bashi: Omoiyari

Imagine being forced from your home. Imagine being sent to a prison camp with no trial, and no promise of release. Imagine all this happened simply because of the language you speak, the shade of your skin, or the roots of your family tree. For over 120,000 Japanese Americans this was a reality during World War II. It’s a reality that Kishi Bashi seeks to reckon with on his latest release Omoiyari.

Omoiyari is Kishi Bashi’s fourth album following the acclaimed 151a (2012), Lighght (2014), and Sonderlust (2016), which have garnered serious acclaim from outlets including NPR Music, The Wall Street Journal, and The Guardian and his most important yet. Many of the songs were initially inspired by history and oppression, and he deftly weaves tales of love, loss, and wanting to connect listeners to the past. Channeling the hard-learned lessons of history, Omoiyari is an uncompromising musical statement on the turbulent sociopolitical atmosphere of present-day America.

Kishi Bashi: Sonderlust

"Sonderlust" is an album forged through heartbreak. After his two previous studio albums ("151a" & "Lighght") and his "String Quartet Live!" release, Kishi Bashi was at a musical impasse. "As I sat down to write songs last summer, I went to all my usual conduits of creation: violin loops, guitar, piano, and I came up with the musical equivalent of fumes", says Kishibashi. "I tried to create orchestral pop recordings that I assumed were my forte, and in turn I found myself standing in front of a creative wall of frightening heights."

At this very same moment of musical uncertainty, K's personal life was falling apart... He and his wife of 13 years had briefly separated and were struggling to keep their marriage together. In his own words, "Touring and its accompanying lifestyle took a heavy toll on my soul and my family". As an outlet, K submerged himself in a new musical direction. Sonderlust emerged as a direct result of this personal struggle taking place at an artistic crossroads.

With the help of producer Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear), engineer Pat Dillet (Angelique Kidjo, David Byrne) and drummer Matt Chamberlain (Morrissey, Fiona Apple, of Montreal), Kishi Bashi has created his most personal and artistically adventurous work to date. "This album is straight from my soul. I questioned everything about what it means to love and desire. The difference between loving someone and being in love."

Kishi Bashi: String Quartet Live!

Kishi Bashi is the pseudonym for violin virtuoso, singer, and composer Kishibashi, who has recorded, toured, and collaborated with artists such as Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, and of Montreal. In 2011, he launched what would become a successful and celebrated solo career, releasing his debut album, 151a, to praise from the likes of Stereogum, SPIN, and the Huffington Post, earning the title of NPR's "Best New Artist Of The Year" in 2012, and gaining critical acclaim for his 2014 sophomore release, Lighght.

Though he studied classical composition and considers the violin his primary muse, Kishi Bashi's songs feature a diverse mix of instrumentation and unconventional songwriting, resulting in a unique and experimental sound that defies genre. He flits from bright chamber-pop with frantic, dizzying melodies to soft but emotionally-charged ballads, looping bits and pieces to create complex layers of sound.

On November 13th, Kishi Bashi will release String Quartet Live!, his third full-length album for Joyful Noise Recordings. It consists of nine songs from both 151a and Lighght, performed live by K and an accompanying string ensemble. Where his first two releases featured an array of stringed instruments, percussion and electronic elements, the new live album finds K's familiar songs reimagined, allowing his soaring vocals to take center stage above a foundation of interweaving strings. Fan favorites like shimmering ballad "Manchester" and the lively "Philosophize In It! Chemicalize With It!" are given new life with updated arrangements and a palpable, infectious energy that can only come from a live performance.

Kishi Bashi: Lighght

Kishi Bashi is the solo project of K Ishibashi: violinist, singer, and composer. The sophomore album "Lighght" (pronounced "Light") continues and expands the sound of his critically acclaimed debut, 151a - which earned Kishi Bashi the title of "Best new artist" by NPR. Since the release of 151a two years ago, Kishi Bashi has toured relentlessly, captivating audiences across the globe with his loop-based live show, and fostering a groundswell of devotees. Following stints with Regina Spector, Sondre Lerche, and of Montreal (where he was a full-time band member & co-producer), in late 2012 K decided to focus solely on his own music, and began embracing the more developed compositions and arrangements heard throughout the new album.
