Minks: By the Hedge

The project of Shaun Kilfoyle, Minks' moody take on indie pop initially drew comparisons to the Cure, New Order, and My Bloody Valentine. Little was known about the group until the April 2010 release of their first single, "Funeral Song". That summer, the band returned with second single "Ophelia", revealing a softer side to Minks' music. Live shows with Veronica Falls and labelmates Cosmetics and Blank Dogs increased buzz around the band, culminating with the release of Minks' debut album, By the Hedge, in January 2011. With their debut, MINKS showcased the ability to make listeners feel an eternal autumn. Kilfoyle's ability to capture the raincoat grey Boston mornings of his youth make you feel like you are listening to a dream, only you're awake and standing in the pouring rain. Put on your raincoat and enjoy the splendor.

Stephen Steinbrink: Utopia Teased

Stunned with grief in the months following the Ghost Ship fire, Oakland-based Stephen Steinbrink ate LSD daily, bought a synthesizer, and locked himself in his shipping container studio, as he wrote and recorded what would become Utopia Teased, as a means of working through his overwhelming feelings of cynicism and loss. Recorded in between stints touring as a member of Dear Nora, and then as a touring member of Girlpool, Utopia Teased is Stephen Steinbrink's followup to his critically acclaimed 2016 album Anagrams. Unlike the pristine production of Anagrams, on Utopia Teased, Steinbrink embraces the rough edges, as he shifts his focus from the craft of production to the art of processing and capturing his experiences with honesty. He explains, "The songs just poured out of me, it hardly felt like work to make them up. It was like turing on a spigot…To me my craft is less about putting in the hours physically playing music - the real work is getting my soul right so that when the holy wave of pure creative energy moves over your house, it will recognize you as worthy enough. If it does, maybe it'll give you a song."

Do Make Say Think: Stubborn Persistent Illusions

Do Make Say Think has been widely celebrated as one of the preeminent instrumental rock bands of the 90s-00s. Stubborn Persistent Illusions is the group's first album in eight years - and a brilliant addition to one of the most consistently inventive and critically praised discographies in the 'post-rock' canon. The band has been acclaimed as "the supernova in Constellation's stellar network...arguably the finest back catalogue of any currently operating instrumental rock band" (Drowned In Sound), creating "some of the most honest, unpretentious, group-oriented rock of their time" (Popmatters). Among the band's strengths is an ineffable naturalism that avoids anything too woolly, proggy, purist or clichéd, while remaining a fundamentally guitar-driven group whose ornate four-and six-string interplay uniquely balances rockism, pastoralism, and electronic-influenced post-production. Stubborn Persistent Illusions is at once familiar and as fresh as anything DMST has committed to tape; produced and mixed as always by the band itself - a continuing affirmation of the group's DIY ethos and their singular self-production acumen and aesthetic. Do Make Say Think enter their third decade with a new album that reaffirms their promise of genuinely expressive, narrative and restorative instrumental rock music - an one that will surely rank among their best.

Sinkane: Mean Love

This is truly universal soul music, uniting rhythm and styles from our world over to help you move, relate and BE.

Sinkane's 'Mean Love' rolls like an emotional, existential history of the artist. It was recorded at The Rumpus Room in Brooklyn, New York and co-produced with long-time Sinkane collaborator and childhood friend, Greg Lofaro.

There is much to fall in love with on Mean Love, his second LP on DFA and the follow up to his breakthrough album 'Mars'. It might be the funky, infectious brass lines of "New Name" or the reggae-soul of "Young Trouble" or the the Sudanese Pop melody of "Omdurman". There are doses of West African slow-burners, surprise appearances of steel guitar arrangements and country-soul, a Noir Blaxploitation vibe, and a newly found sweet falsetto voice reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield specifically in album standout "Hold Tight".

Mean Love is an emotionally rich and generous soul album with a very welcoming appeal. The restless creative drive of Ahmed Gallab these past few years has led to a true breakthrough moment for the artist, and this album is a true reward for time well spent.

Pink Mountaintops: Get Back

Pink Mountaintops might not be the best-known band ever to make rock 'n' roll, but in Get Back they just might have written its scripture -- an exploration and celebration of what, exactly, rock 'n' roll can be. When the aliens touch down and they don't know rock 'n' roll, you can play them Get Back from start to finish and that'll be all they need.

Do Make Say Think: Do Make Say Think

Do Make Say Think self-recorded its self-titled debut album in Toronto in 1996-1997 and self-released the record on CD. It made its way to Constellation's stereo in spring 1998, just as the label was getting off the ground. Constellation re-released the album in more elaborate bespoke CD packaging in 1999 and Do Make Say Think became the label's fifth release.

This terrific debut remained one of the very few titles on Constellation that was never issued on vinyl, as the label's limited resources in the early years conspired against a 2xLP pressing at the time. This historical aberration is now being remedied by a lovely deluxe double 180-gram edition of the album, with the CD's unique window-cut artwork and packaging translated to glorious 12-inch dimensions.

One of the first groups to define a newly genre-blending aesthetics and collective/collaborative ethics of (post-) rock experimentation in the Toronto scene, Do Make Say Think has released a superb, dynamic and continually inventive series of instrumental rock albums since their auspicious debut. To commemorate the 15th anniversary of Constellation's 1998 release of the debut CD – we couldn't be prouder to present Do Make Say Think on vinyl for the first time.

Minks: Tides End

"Tides End" is the second MINKS album, but you could say it’s a world away from the first. Moving out of New York City to try and cure a bout of writer's block, frontman/songwriter Sonny Kilfoyle wound up in the East End of Long Island. Surrounded by water on three sides, it's the same place that drew Warhol, Pollock, de Kooning, Steinbeck and more to escape the constant barrage of information of the urban landscape. The result is not just a romantic trip into isolation, but a melodic and warm experience to immerse yourself in. It's a pop record, with all the hooks and harmonies you'd expect from that, delivered with experience, depth and hope.

Sinkane: Mars

Repress on colored vinyl, includes a bonus digital remix album.

On one level, Mars is dense with deep, polyrhythmic grooves that hail directly to Africa; on another level, it’s a 21st century party record that acknowledges the global music village in which we all now live. The music of Mars is kinetic, sexy and catchy. But at its core, it's one man's way of working through a very American story.

Pink Mountaintops: Outside Love

"Outside Love" is ten songs of love and hate that read like a Danielle Steele romance novel but that would probably make for bad television.

"Outside Love" is the third album by Pink Mountaintops, AKA Stephen McBean, who has slowly emerged as a distinctive voice and a very special contributor to the North American songbook. A veteran of the Vancouver/Victoria punk rock scene, McBean is best known for his contributions to acclaimed rock band Black Mountain, as principal songwriter, guitarist and co-vocalist.

Pink Mountaintops: "Single Life" / "My Best Friend"

So we asked Stephen McBean to help us out with the description of this 7-inch slice of vinyl heaven he created. We got the following key phrases out of him: "European car ads" and "4 am dancing shoes". The first song called "Single Life" is yet another in a long line of great fuzzed out Velvet-styled gems by Pink Mountaintops, sped up ever so slightly to be in synch with the minds of akathisiacs everywhere. And the reverse side, "My Best Friend", is the more affecting and spiritual of the two, perhaps McBean's most beautifully crafted song to date.

Pink Mountaintops: Axis of Evol

Pink Mountaintops is Stephen Mcbean. His other bands to date have included a straight out punk outfit, a crusty punk/metal band, and, most recently, a psych-tinged maximal rock group whose self-titled debut record, Black Mountain, captured a great amount of critical acclaim (and meteorically became Jagjaguwar's best-selling title.) With Axis of Evol, Pink Mountaintops’ second full-length record, Mcbean has once again created something much greater than the sum of his influences. Axis of Evol begins with a forboding spiritual. It then almost immediately ramps up into a thumping, buzzing, blissful haze, at various parts sounding like the Velvet Underground or Spacemen 3 or the Jesus and Mary Chain circa Psycho Candy, and then ends with a hypnotic, Smog-like meditation. Throughout the record, Mcbean sings about love and war, the love of war, and the war of love—on the body, on the mind and on the soul. Home-recorded and largely self-produced, Axis of Evol is a further testament to the vital prolificacy of Stephen Mcbean.

Pink Mountaintops: Pink Mountaintops

Can a sexually frustrated Canned Heat seduce a hot and bothered Neu into a cheap one night stand? The rock'n'roll road can be a long and lonely one. And it leaves much time for the mind to wander, to fixate and to obsess over the human body and all its wondrously dirty parts. Enter The Pink Mountaintops. Their debut record begins with "She caught my eye and I was on fire" and it ends with a repetitive begging plea "Don't walk away!" from a reworking of Joy Division's Atmosphere. In between these bookend statements, mountains are fucked, an ode to rock'n'roll groupies is sung, and tales of loose panties and ex-models are exposed. The Pink Mountaintops is Stephen McBean, formerly of Jerk With A Bomb and now also exemplar member of Black Mountain. The debut record -- conceived at dawn, while high on a mix of trucker speed and Red Bull, and while sailing down a Colorado highway on route to Denver as the last decent Floyd record played on the cassette deck -- was written and recorded in a month with friends Amber Webber, Joshua Wells, and Christoph Hofmeister. The fore-mentioned country drone stoned drug rock band Black Mountain lent limbs, lungs, and amplifiers to the festivities.
